This figure has come together nicely. My hands have caught up to my mind which pushed some new information to my eye; i.e. knowing more anatomical structure allows me to see more and be more accurate with how that translates to the sculpture. With this amazing model I really have to be quick and do it right the first time. His muscles and tendons will shimmer as he keeps balance, and I worked to bring that dynamism into the form with subtle interactions of planes and volumes. This is the first figure I have been proud of for quite awhile.

A menagerie of animals all met out in the cold for a dance. My freshman class of 3D-Design performed at the Marriott Library fountain for our final project.

Our little lady took up with cancer and we had to put her down today. She was a wonderful cat; talkative, gentle, and affectionate. She will be greatly missed.

Elizabeth wrote this poem for her:

Lavender blue,

a delicate hue,

are you with me now?

Soft as light
and cherry bright,
as sweet as gentle down.
Sapphire blue,
the stars do move
beneath a rainbow sky.

I worked a bit without the model last night in preparation for his standing for me today, the main focus was adding his hands and the ball- but then I gave him a full figure once over as well. There is a point where one can work without the model without making a mess of things, as long as the model returns to balance out any areas that get out of hand. This back and forth of model v no model allows structural knowledge to show its boundaries, and is very helpful when the model returns to see your footnotes of structure built into the form.

Of the pair, the latest figure is on the left. The last update for the figure on the right was back in October. They both are from the same model- a lovely gal who’s male equivalent took awhile to find but is underway (the previous post). Neither of the ladies are finished yet, but they are well enough along to post as a pair.

This portrait is a blend of E and the model. The latest is keeping more to the model, although my focus has been on the figure and I have only just established the basic facial features. Working to a likeness will take awhile longer.

I’ve started new work with a great male model; he is a ballet dancer and wow. A professional dancer brings a whole other level to the aesthetic. I have three female figures in the works, and haven’t posted much on their process so far. I start working, then it gets dark and the artificial light makes for sallow images so I put it off and put it off. I took a few images of the process with the latest work: First off I measure him for the armature, and do another whole round of measures for the figure- then we work to establish a pose and I take a few rounds of reference photos. Before our next session I build out the wire armature. He is well over 6′ tall, so I had to go to the plumbing store and have them cut me a new longer length of vertical pipe. Once the armature is built, I sculpt from the photos and measurements to have a basic form to work from when the model returns.

He stood for me on Sunday for a few hours and the form moved along nicely. He has a wonderful internal dynamism.

Today I pushed along, and formed out a few proportional issues, then gave it a quick once-over to smooth out lumps and clay wash-boarding. This process loses some nice surface information, but provides a better basis for our next session. By then I’ll have some basic forms in place for his hands as well- it has come way too far for exposed wire!
